Philipp Bayer

Computational Biologist

Philipp is a biologist who uses computers to understand life. After a PhD in Applied Bioinformatics from the University of Queensland, he worked at the University of Western Australia with plant breeders to feed a future world.

Now Philipp works with the Minderoo Foundation in the OceanOmics project where he uses applied machine learning and big data approaches to map environmental DNA (eDNA) from Australia’s oceans, with the goal revolutionising how we measure, observe, and protect our oceans.

In his spare time Philipp looks after his two sons (5 and 7) reasonably well; scars have been kept minimal.
